TV: Hi! We are with Sander Kleinenberg. How are you doing? SK: I’m feeling great! Even though the sun is going to disappear… it has 20 seconds left, I think. TV: Listen! You won an award in Miami. SK: Yes, but that was a year ago. TV: What were the consequences of that? Has it helped you in any way? SK: No! Not at all… but it has been great for my ego!!! I haven’t benefited from being awarded for the Best DJ, I’m not like those who travel around the world and put it on their flyers. The best world DJ… well, the truth is that such thing doesn’t exist! I think it’s funny there is such recognition… but there are so many DJs. TV: Well, what does really happen at the Miami Winter Conference? SK: WMC is a representation of the whole electronic scene. DJs, record labels, artists present their new sounds… or whatever they want us to listen to! But it is simply an excuse to party during a week! TV: Is it the same as Ibiza? SK: Totally, it’s what I always say, WMC is like the whole season in Ibiza compressed in one week. TV: It must be madness, knowing how Ibiza is in summer. Well, and what are you doing today? SK: I’m going to play tonight. Today I’m launching my ‘This is Sander Kleinenberg’ compilation and this is always exciting. It is my new album, which I’ve been working on for some time and now I’m promoting it around the world. Now it is Ibiza’s turn. TV: Is it possible that I have heard a track called ‘This is Miami’ and another one called ‘This is Den Haag’? SK: Yes, that’s right, because the song has been cut in different ways so you can find a Den Haag or… I believe Erick Morillo made 50 versions! He has a friend who sings accappela and made 30 different versions. One for each city he would visit. I made the same for 10 or 12 cities I was visiting! Lisbon, Paris, London… TV: And what would you have done if you weren’t a DJ? You wouldn’t be here sitting with us… Where would you be? SK: Well, I don’t know if I would be here sitting but I love cooking and that could be a possibility. I’m sure I would be busy doing something creative… I’m certain about that. TV: What is the question you wouldn’t like to hear again? Because you’ve been asked 100 times or because you don’t like to answer it… SK: Well… How are things with Kate Moss?... I found this quite irritating and also… What do I do with my money? TV: Kate Moss? What do you have to do with Kate Moss? SK: You see! Here we go again… ha ha.. I hate that question so much… TV: Yes, but now I’m curious! Kate Moss, what do you have to do with her? Any gossip? SK: Well, you know we’re not going to talk about that… TV: So, Pacha tonight? If I’m not wrong, you’re playing in the main room. SK: Yes, you’re right. I have been playing Fridays with Pete Tong for Pure Pacha, which is fantastic. The night is better than I expected. Every Friday it rocks and, it’s a whole experience… And today I’m playing for Renaissance, the label with which I’m launching my new album ‘This is Sander Kleinenberg’. It is something special because we have been working together for 15 years. Making a compilation with Renaissance is always something special. Also, the history between Renaissance and Pacha goes a long way back. TV: You are a resident DJ in many clubs around the globe… SK: Well, for some time I had a night in New York. I also do something with Ministry of Sound every two months. I’m in The Red Light in Paris every two months and in Panama club in Amsterdam. Then yes, there are a couple of clubs I visit periodically… I love it because it is a better way to get to know the crowd. I also like it because you can experiment a bit more, you can invent something more but you always have an idea of what to expect. TV: You are doing something completely new. I don’t really understand what it is. It is called DVD Djing. Or isn’t it that new? SK: It’s a very simple thing! Before we would play vinyl, later CDs and now we also play DVDs, so we can also play with images. I’ve been doing this for a few years now and I believe it’s an extra element that makes my sets more spectacular. I difference myself from the rest and offer a good show. Thank you Sander Kleinenberg! |
